Tiga bulan setelah versi terakhir, Linus baru saja merilis Linux 2.6.23 . Versi ini mengemas antara lain CFS process scheduler baru, mekanisme read-ahead yang lebih sederhana, lguest 'Linux-on-Linux' paravirtualization hypervisor, dukungan untuk XEN guest, dukungan untuk KVM smp guest, variable process argument length, SLUB kini merupakan default slab allocator, SELinux protection untuk mengeksploitasi null dereferences menggunakan mmap, perbaikan pada XFS dan ext4, dukungan PPP over L2TP, the 'lumpy' reclaim algorithm, a userspace driver framework, the O_CLOEXEC file descriptor flag, perbaikan pada splice, fallocate() syscall baru, lock statistics, dukungan untuk multiqueue network devices, aneka drivers baru dan banyak penambahan fitur maupun perbaikan lainnya.
